Sunderland's Remarkable Season Under Regis le Bris
"We want to reach 40 points as soon as possible."
Sunderland is exceeding expectations this season, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League after nine matches.
Despite the team's impressive start, manager Regis le Bris remains focused on the primary goal of securing Premier League safety, insisting that reaching 40 points is the immediate target rather than speculating about European football.
At the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign, Sunderland was among the favorites for relegation, with Opta's Supercomputer predicting they would finish at the bottom of the table. However, after nine games, the Black Cats have accumulated 17 points, marking the best performance by a promoted team at this stage of the season since Hull City, who had 20 points in 2008-09.
"The emotions within the club are excellent, it's impressive," le Bris remarked following Sunderland's recent 2-1 comeback victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. "We've fostered a sense of togetherness not only across the squad but also with the fans. They deserve this. When the energy is positive, it creates many opportunities. For us, the target remains unchanged."
While le Bris is nearing his goal of 40 points, it's important to understand the man behind Sunderland's remarkable season.
When Sunderland announced le Bris's appointment in June 2024, the reaction was largely one of disappointment. After a three-month search for a permanent replacement for Michael Beale, the club had appointed a manager who had just experienced relegation from France's Ligue 1 with Lorient.
However, following the Black Cats' triumph in the play-off final against Coventry, ending an eight-year absence from the top flight, the sentiment among supporters has shifted to immense pride.
BBC Radio Newcastle commentator Nick Barnes noted, "The fans love him. The results are the first thing that wins them over, and he has certainly achieved that. They also appreciate that he is genuinely a nice person with a pleasant demeanor. He smiles, can crack a joke, and is very patient, which has resonated with people."
Le Bris, who holds a doctorate in sport physiology and biomechanics, is not your typical manager. His popularity on Wearside took him by surprise when he was mobbed by fans during a visit to the seafront at Roker early in his tenure. Since then, the calm and composed coach has opted for quieter outings in Newcastle.
At the Academy of Light, however, he truly shines. Barnes described him as "a bit shy but very personable, with a wry sense of humor. He has become more comfortable in his own skin. He is extremely focused and seems to immerse himself in the job, humorously claiming he is happiest in front of his laptop watching matches. He learned English specifically to come to this country and make a name for himself, which he has certainly done."
Le Bris had a modest playing career, featuring in Ligue 1 for Rennes, but he found his true calling in coaching at the age of 27 with Wasquehal. He quickly earned his coaching badges and returned to Rennes to take on a youth coaching role, achieving success by winning the French equivalent of the Youth Cup and the U18 Championship before moving to Lorient.
At Lorient, he was heavily involved in youth development, achieving success with the under-17s and later becoming the reserve team manager. His ambition to improve and take on a top role was evident, as he sought opportunities to learn about different leagues through trips abroad to clubs in Germany and Spain.
In 2022, le Bris took over Lorient, leading the team to second place in the table after winning eight of his first ten games. Although they finished 10th, the team secured notable victories against Lyon, Lille, and Paris Saint-Germain, which featured superstars Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. However, his second season ended in disappointment with relegation on the final day, leading to his departure from the club by mutual consent on June 22, 2024.
‘Le Bris is a Pure Coach’
One individual who had been monitoring developments at Lorient was Sunderland's French owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus. With a talented yet youthful squad, Sunderland required a guiding hand. Despite lacking experience in English football and only two years as a head coach, le Bris emerged as an ideal candidate for the role.
French football expert Julien Laurens commented, "Regis le Bris is a pure coach. His primary focus is on the training pitch, conducting sessions, conveying his ideas, and the game itself. Everything else is secondary to him. Le Bris was one of the best academy directors and youth-level coaches in France. He excels at coaching young players and helping them improve. I had no doubt that moving to Sunderland would be a successful venture for him."
‘Sunderland was Perfect for Him’
Growing up in Brittany, le Bris takes pride in his roots and the strong cultural identity of the region. While moving to the north-east of England may seem like a significant transition, the 49-year-old has developed a strong connection to Wearside.
Laurens remarked, "He was previously associated with a club in Lorient that had a strong identity. Sunderland was perfect for him, as he could only thrive at a club with such a profound sense of identity and community. He is a proud Breton and understands the significance of this to the people of Sunderland and the region as a whole."
Le Bris is now the first French manager in the Premier League since Patrick Vieira left Crystal Palace in March 2023. Notably, he is among only four newly promoted managers in Premier League history to earn more points than he has after nine games, joining the ranks of Kenny Dalglish, Bryan Robson, Phil Brown, and Frank Clark.
Michael Carrick expressed his admiration for le Bris on Match of the Day, stating, "I’m hugely impressed. There are numerous positives to consider. They had four players from last season's squad in the lineup against Chelsea, indicating significant changes. From a coaching perspective, implementing those changes so quickly and accumulating the points they have is an incredible achievement."
