Sunderland's Impressive Start to a Challenging Journey
Given the turmoil at the club over the past decade, Sunderland fans could be forgiven for feeling apprehensive about their return to the Premier League. The path to the top tier has been long and arduous, with the Black Cats experiencing consecutive relegations and spending four years in League One.
Last season's promotion was particularly dramatic, as Sunderland finished 16th the previous year but managed to upset the odds by defeating Sheffield United in the play-off final with a last-minute winner at Wembley.
However, Sunderland's revival is not solely due to luck. After making 14 first-team signings this summer, there were concerns that the team might lose the cohesion that contributed to their promotion. Yet, the Black Cats have maintained their momentum this season.
With 14 points from eight matches, Sunderland has matched their best start to a Premier League campaign. Manager Le Bris remains cautious, stating, "For me, it's just a question of the next game. It's a long journey and a tough journey. If we can earn points early, it boosts our confidence."
Much of Sunderland's success can be attributed to their strong home form, with 10 of their 14 points secured at the Stadium of Light, a record matched only by league leaders Arsenal. Remarkably, Sunderland's performance has defied the trend of recently promoted teams. Last season, Southampton, Leicester, and Ipswich combined for just 14 points after eight matches, a figure Sunderland has already surpassed on their own.
If the benchmark for survival is 40 points, Sunderland is well on its way to ensuring safety.
Wolves Struggle with Ineffective Attack
Wolves may be one point better off than at the same stage last season, but there are few positives to take from Saturday's trip to the North East. Despite only eight matches having been played, they find themselves five points adrift of safety, at risk of being cut adrift, and possess the worst goal difference in the league.
Wolves have failed to score in four of their eight matches so far, marking the 14th instance of a team accumulating two or fewer points at this stage, with eight of the previous 13 ultimately facing relegation. Notably, Wolves are the only club that has avoided relegation from such a position in the last five seasons.
While Vitor Pereira praised his players' performance following a lackluster first half, they still fell short against opponents who were competing in League One just three years ago. Pereira reflected, "When I look back at the first half, I don't remember any good moments. In the second half, we corrected our mistakes and played 30 minutes of high-quality football, creating three or four scoring chances. In the Premier League, you cannot afford to lose those moments. Unfortunately, we conceded late in the game. With two strikers on the field, we stopped playing our game and resorted to long balls, which is not our style."
Pereira, who signed a new contract a month ago after a series of four consecutive Premier League defeats, may find the wisdom of that decision questioned as the team's situation remains precarious. Another pressing concern is that Jorgen Strand Larsen has yet to score in the top flight this season, despite averaging a goal every 3.5 games throughout his career. It was assumed he would be pivotal in helping the club avoid trouble this season, especially after rejecting substantial offers from Newcastle during the summer.
