Tuchel Advocates Long Throws and Balls for World Cup Strategy
England manager Thomas Tuchel is advocating for the use of long throw-ins and long balls as part of the team's strategy for next summer's World Cup.
The Three Lions currently lead Group K in the qualifying rounds with four consecutive wins, placing them five points ahead of Serbia, whom they will face on Tuesday.
In the qualifying matches, Tuchel's squad has utilized long balls in only 4% of their passes, a decrease compared to Gareth Southgate's England, which employed long balls 8.8% of the time during Euro 2024.
However, it's worth noting that two of England's four qualifying matches were against Andorra.
Long throw-ins have recently gained prominence in English football. "I told you - the long throw-in is back," Tuchel remarked. "But we do not have a lot of time. Once we arrive at the World Cup, all these elements will be significant. We will discuss long throw-ins, long kicks from the goalkeeper, and not just short passing."
Tuchel will have three more international breaks to collaborate with England's players before the pre-World Cup friendlies, assuming the Three Lions secure their qualification for the tournament.
"We cannot fit everything into just four days of training, but these aspects will be important. We will see how it goes," Tuchel added. "I need to reflect now with my assistant coaches. All these patterns and crosses are making a comeback as well."
The contract of German coach Tuchel with the England team is set to expire following the World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
