Van Dijk Responds to Rooney's Criticism of Liverpool Leadership
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has responded to Wayne Rooney's recent remarks, labeling them as "lazy criticism" regarding the team's leadership amid a challenging season.
Last season, the Reds clinched the Premier League title under manager Arne Slot in his inaugural campaign. However, after a strong start to the 2025-26 season with five consecutive victories, the team has struggled to maintain its momentum.
Following a fourth straight league defeat against Brentford last week, Rooney, a former England and Manchester United forward, suggested that Van Dijk and teammate Mohamed Salah had not effectively led the team this season.
In response, Van Dijk stated, "I didn’t hear him last year," after Liverpool managed to halt their losing streak with a victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.
He continued, "It doesn’t hurt me. Just to come back to this particular player, obviously a legend and a significant figure in the game who has inspired many, I can only say positive things. However, I feel that comment is a bit of lazy criticism.
"It’s easy to blame other players, but he knows we are all in this together, trying to support each other to overcome these challenges. When things were going well last year, you didn’t hear such comments at all. It is what it is.
"Pundits have their jobs to do. He has his opinion, and we must deal with it. There are no hard feelings; I don’t take it personally."
As it stands, Liverpool is third in the Premier League, trailing leaders Arsenal by seven points, as they prepare for two crucial matches this week.
Slot's squad is set to host Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, followed by a visit to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Van Dijk added, "I’ve heard reports about [Slot] being under pressure, but I don’t believe we play at a club that makes hasty decisions. We all feel we can work our way out of this situation. While it’s not guaranteed, we can achieve it together. As long as we believe, remain humble, and keep working, we can do it, and we all share that sentiment."
