New Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres is eager to "do his own thing" after inheriting the iconic number 14 shirt, previously worn by the club's legendary striker Thierry Henry.
The 27-year-old finalized his transfer, valued at up to £64 million (€73 million), on Saturday. This acquisition marks the end of Arsenal's search for a striker to bolster their ambitions of securing a trophy, a feat not achieved since the FA Cup victory in 2020 during Mikel Arteta's first season.
Henry's remarkable record of 228 goals in 377 appearances has made him synonymous with Arsenal's number 14. Ahead of his potential debut match against Tottenham in Hong Kong on Thursday, Gyokeres expressed that choosing the squad number was an "easy" decision.
"Of course, I'm aware of the history," Gyokeres remarked. "To be honest, there weren't many numbers available. When I realized this one was free, it was an easy choice to make."
Henry, who won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and four Premier League Golden Boots with Arsenal, set a high standard. However, Gyokeres is not concerned about comparisons.
"I don't intend to be compared to his achievements," he stated. "I just want to showcase my abilities and do my own thing. He was an incredible player, but different from me."
Arteta believes the number 14 is a fitting choice for Gyokeres after their first meeting. "I noticed his conviction immediately," Arteta explained. "He felt a strong connection to the club and its history, including what the shirt represents. When you feel it, you go for it."
Gyokeres' signing has sparked significant fan enthusiasm, with his replica shirts breaking club sales records. "It's wonderful to see such support. It adds extra motivation," he commented. "I have high expectations for myself and will strive to perform regardless."
'Joining Arsenal Wasn't a Difficult Choice'
The transfer saga involving Gyokeres was one of the summer's most prolonged, delayed in its final stages as Arsenal and Sporting negotiated add-ons to the fee. Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas, mentioned Gyokeres faced disciplinary action for missing training, further fueling fan interest.
"It's been a unique experience for me," Gyokeres shared. "I was eager to join, but it wasn't straightforward. Now that I'm here, it feels fantastic."
He continued, "I trained individually to maintain my routine. It was repetitive, but ultimately worth it."
Arteta and the players are excited about the Swedish international's arrival. Gyokeres felt welcomed, stating, "It's a prestigious club with a rich history. I was drawn to being part of it."
Despite other offers, Gyokeres affirmed, "This wasn't a difficult decision for me."
With 97 goals and 26 assists in 102 appearances for Sporting, Gyokeres is confident but anticipates a transition period in the Premier League. "Adapting is necessary, but many players from Portugal have thrived in England," he noted.
Gyokeres has only been with Arsenal for a short time, with Arteta already outlining expectations. "He wants me to maximize my strengths," Gyokeres said. "I've only had one training session, but I'm eager to integrate more fully."
