Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres is poised to finalize his transfer to Arsenal from Sporting this weekend. A £63.5 million deal was previously reported by BBC Sport to be in its concluding stages, with the transfer delayed due to negotiations over add-on payments between the clubs.
The 27-year-old has been granted permission to travel for his medical examination and is expected to sign a five-year contract, officially becoming an Arsenal player in the coming days.
The Arsenal team is currently in Singapore, embarking on the first leg of their pre-season tour in Asia.
Gyokeres has attracted significant attention during the summer transfer window, following an impressive season where he scored 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting. Earlier this month, BBC Sport reported that Arsenal shifted their focus to Gyokeres after encountering difficulties in their pursuit of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.
Manager Mikel Arteta's quest to secure a top-tier striker has been protracted, as he aims to strengthen his attacking lineup after Arsenal scored 17 fewer goals than Liverpool, finishing 10 points behind the Premier League champions. Recently, the Spanish manager bolstered his attack by signing England winger Noni Madueke, 23, from Chelsea.
Gyokeres, who previously played for Brighton and Coventry, scored 97 goals in 102 appearances over two seasons in Portugal, contributing to Sporting's consecutive Primeira Liga titles. During his tenure at Coventry, he was among the Championship's leading scorers, netting 43 goals in 116 matches and earning a spot in the Championship Team of the Year for the 2022-23 season as Coventry reached the play-off final. He subsequently joined Sporting for approximately £20 million that summer.
Since making his debut for Sweden in 2019 against Finland, Gyokeres has earned 26 caps and scored 15 goals for his national team.
