Wales Coach Craig Bellamy Eager for World Cup Rivalry with Canada
Wales head coach Craig Bellamy is anticipating a renewed rivalry with Canada’s counterpart, Jesse Marsch, should his team secure a spot in the World Cup.
If Wales triumph in their play-off semi-final and final in March, they will join co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar in Group B at next summer's tournament in North America.
The anticipated opening match between Canada and Wales in Toronto is set to be a highly charged encounter, following a contentious finish to their friendly match in September.
Bellamy expressed dissatisfaction with the way Marsch and his coaching staff celebrated their narrow 1-0 victory in Swansea, while the Canadian players and their manager displayed exuberance in their post-match celebrations.
After the game, Bellamy remarked, "I hope to see you [Marsch and Canada] at the World Cup," and with the recent draw in Washington D.C., that possibility could materialize next June.
"I watched a little bit of the World Cup draw, but I lost track after the first 20 minutes and returned about five hours later," joked the former Liverpool and Manchester City forward.
"My main focus is on getting there first. We must secure our place, but if that happens, I look forward to having a conversation with him beforehand as well.
"I have nothing against him; in fact, I find him quite intriguing from a distance, even though I don't know him personally. However, some of his comments and interviews after facing us have been quite interesting to follow."
When asked about the nature of the Canadian celebrations, Bellamy admitted, "Honestly, all of that annoys me. There should be a level of respect. It feels more suited for TikTok or Instagram. I’m not old-fashioned, but there’s a standard we should uphold."
Marsch fueled the rivalry further during an interview in October, stating, "After we beat Wales, [Bellamy] fabricated some absurd claims about our celebrations to divert attention from their loss." He emphasized, "This is a different Canada. This is a talented Canada. This is a team that doesn’t fear anyone."
Before a potential rematch can take place, Wales must navigate the play-offs successfully, as they did to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
Bellamy's squad will host Bosnia-Herzegovina in their play-off semi-final on March 26, and if they win, they will face either Italy or Northern Ireland in Cardiff five days later for a chance at a World Cup spot.
"We can't afford to look too far ahead; our focus must be entirely on Bosnia. They are the most important challenge right now. If we don’t win, our journey ends here," Bellamy stated. "I will be analyzing matches involving Northern Ireland and Italy as well, preparing for each scenario due to the quick turnaround.
"Regardless of the outcome, we will play the other team anyway, as the losers of each semi-final will face off in a friendly. This is part of our preparation, and we must maintain the intensity by keeping an eye on both teams."
