Wolves Manager Vitor Pereira Close to New Contract Amid Tough Start
Manager Vitor Pereira is nearing a new contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers despite the team's challenging start to the season.
The Portuguese coach's current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and an agreement is expected to be reached before the upcoming weekend.
This development reflects the club's confidence in Pereira, who took over from Gary O'Neil in December.
Wolves, who are scheduled to host Leeds United in the Premier League on Saturday, have suffered four consecutive losses in their opening league matches, placing them at the bottom of the table.
Although they secured a victory against West Ham in the EFL Cup in August, they risk becoming only the sixth team in Premier League history to lose their first five games.
Pereira assumed control of the team when they were in the relegation zone last December, successfully guiding them to a 16th-place finish, 17 points clear of relegation.
During his tenure, Wolves achieved six consecutive Premier League victories between March and April, which ensured their survival. However, they have not won a league match since a 3-0 victory over Leicester City at the end of that winning streak.
Earlier this month, Executive Chairman Jeff Shi emphasized the importance of retaining Pereira, stating, "Wolves need stability now - we need a coach to stay here and help us for a long time. Every coach needs time and the pieces of the puzzle to fit together. We should provide the coach the time and players necessary to prepare for the season."
Shi further remarked, "The most crucial aspect to define this season is the squad and the coach, as well as the chemistry and unity. With a solid foundation, we can have a successful season. Without it, uncertainty may arise."
He also noted that prior to Pereira's arrival, the team struggled with chemistry issues, which have since been resolved. "This year, we have a strong team spirit and a highly committed structure," Shi added.
