Andreas Skov Olsen Joins Rangers on Loan to Revive Career
New Rangers signing Andreas Skov Olsen was regarded as a significant acquisition when he joined Bundesliga club Wolfsburg last January.
However, within a year, the 26-year-old Danish winger found himself training with the youth team while Wolfsburg's first team faced their B team in a practice match at a training camp in Lisbon.
Now, the left-footed right winger has arrived in Glasgow on loan, having been introduced to the Ibrox crowd on Friday before their Scottish Cup match against Annan Athletic. He aims to rejuvenate a career that once promised great success following a remarkable stint at Club Brugge.
During his time at Brugge, Skov Olsen netted 49 goals and provided 30 assists across 124 appearances, securing two league titles and participating in Champions League football.
By the time he joined Wolfsburg, he had already represented Denmark at the 2022 World Cup, as well as at Euro 2020 and 2024.
His brief tenure in Serie A with Bologna followed his breakout performance in his home country with FC Nordsjaelland, though it did not yield significant success.
Encouraged by his experiences at Brugge, Skov Olsen arrived in Germany determined to score and leverage his speed to create opportunities. Unfortunately, his chances were limited.
“Initially, under Ralph Hasenhuttl, he was utilized in a more defensive role than perhaps suited him,” noted German football commentator Derek Rae. “After a coaching change, Skov Olsen was assigned a more attacking position in a 4-2-3-1 formation, starting the season with a solid performance and a goal against Heidenheim. However, his form declined, and he eventually fell out of favor.”
“It was clear he wanted to leave for understandable reasons. The coaching changes certainly didn’t aid his situation, and a transfer is beneficial for both parties.”
'Still a lot of pages to be written'
After facing challenges in Italy and Germany but flourishing in Belgium and Denmark, there is speculation that the Scottish Premiership may better suit Skov Olsen's playing style.
Toke Moller Theilade, editor-in-chief of Denmark's Vilfortpark.dk, believes this is the case. “He broke through at a young age in the Danish league,” he stated. “At 19, he became the top scorer, and the expectations were incredibly high. He was a striker back then.”
“However, it seems he has performed best at clubs slightly below the top leagues. He excelled in Denmark, thrived in Belgium, and I believe he will do very well at Rangers. At this point in his career, we must recognize that he may struggle if he transitions to the absolute highest levels.”
Skov Olsen has earned 40 international caps, the latest of which was against Greece in September. Although he did not participate at Hampden as Scotland secured a World Cup finals spot, he is eager to be involved in the upcoming playoff matches in March.
“I think this is a great opportunity for him to regain his confidence and swagger,” added Moller Theilade. “As a player, he possesses strong technical skills. He can take on opponents one-on-one, dribble effectively, and is quite fast for his size, capable of delivering dangerous crosses and making accurate passes. He is versatile and a great finisher.”
“He should have ample opportunities to shine, and at this stage of his career, there are still many chapters left to be written.”
