Cardiff City Advances to EFL Cup Quarter-Finals with Victory Over Wrexham
Will Fish scored his first goal for Cardiff City as the Bluebirds defeated fellow Welsh side Wrexham, securing a place in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
Yousef Salech opened the scoring for Cardiff with a close-range tap-in, marking his sixth goal of the season across all competitions.
The Bluebirds had opportunities to extend their lead in the first half, with Omari Kellyman, Rubin Colwill, and Cian Ashford all coming close to finding the net.
However, they were made to pay for their missed chances when former Cardiff player Kieffer Moore equalized for Wrexham with a header just seven minutes into the second half.
Fish restored Cardiff's lead in the 71st minute with a well-placed volley that beat Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton at the near post, allowing the League One side to claim victory in this Welsh derby at Stok Cae Ras.
Cardiff dominated possession from the start, although Nathan Broadhead had the best early chance but shot wide.
The home side's slow start was highlighted when George Thomason lost possession in the 13th minute. Rubin Colwill seized the opportunity, setting up Kellyman, whose shot was brilliantly saved by Burton, but Salech was on hand to convert the rebound.
This performance would have pleased Bluebirds manager Brian Barry-Murphy, especially after his team's previous match against Bolton Wanderers, where they had no shots on target and lost 1-0 in added time.
Wrexham's goalkeeper Burton played a crucial role in keeping the game close, denying Kellyman at his near post and later tipping Ashford's powerful shot onto the crossbar.
The Wrexham goal frame continued to be a source of relief for the home side as Rubin Colwill's free-kick struck the crossbar, heightening the tension among the Wrexham supporters.
Wrexham began to show some attacking intent before halftime, but Sam Smith's low shot from distance went wide, leaving the hosts with a challenging second half ahead.
In response, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson made three substitutions at halftime, bringing on Moore, Josh Windass, and Matty James for Smith, Broadhead, and Ollie Rathbone.
Wrexham equalized shortly after the break, with Ryan Longman's deflected cross met by the onrushing Moore, who headed the ball past Nathan Trott for his sixth goal of the season.
As the match progressed, it became more evenly contested, and shortly afterward, Rubin Colwill's shot was saved by Burton.
Barry-Murphy responded by substituting Alex Robertson and David Turnbull for Ryan Wintle and Joel Colwill, having previously introduced Isaak Davies from the bench.
Just two minutes after coming on, Robertson forced a critical block from Conor Coady, but Cardiff soon regained the lead in spectacular fashion.
Joel Bagan's deep cross found Fish unmarked at the back post, and the 22-year-old volleyed the ball into the net, igniting wild celebrations among the 1,249 traveling fans.
Parkinson's final substitutions included Issa Kabore and Ryan Hardie replacing Coady and Ryan Barnett. Hardie's first touch was a header from Lewis O'Brien's free-kick, which was saved by Trott, and moments later, he had another shot blocked after breaking through on goal.
At the other end, Burton managed to keep out a fierce strike from Isaak Davies.
Despite their efforts, Wrexham could not find an equalizer, and Cardiff advanced to the last eight of the EFL Cup for the first time since their run to the final in the 2011-12 season.
