Charlton Athletic Defeats Sheffield Wednesday, Sending Them to Bottom of the Championship
Charlton Athletic secured a vital victory at The Valley, sending struggling Sheffield Wednesday to the bottom of the Championship table.
Goals from Sonny Carey and defender Reece Burke put Charlton in control by halftime. Despite a spirited response from Sheffield Wednesday, highlighted by Jamal Lowe's opportunistic goal, they faced further setbacks as goalkeeper Ethan Horvath was sent off in added time, resulting in yet another defeat for the Owls.
This loss, combined with Sheffield United's victory over Watford, sees Wednesday languishing at the bottom of the table during a tumultuous week in which it was revealed they are facing a winding-up petition due to an unpaid £1 million tax bill.
Charlton's win marks a strong comeback following their defeat against Preston before the international break, moving them closer to the playoff spots, now sitting in ninth place.
The Addicks have been impressive at home, winning 15 of their last 19 matches at The Valley. In the first half, the outcome never seemed in doubt as they kept pressing Henrik Pedersen's side. The best chance for Wednesday came from Lowe, whose free header went straight to Charlton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski.
Charlton opened the scoring when Carey initiated and completed a move that led to his third goal in as many home games. He passed to Tyreece Campbell and received the return before firing a shot that Horvath parried. Unfortunately for the goalkeeper, the ball deflected off his foot, allowing Carey to chip his second attempt over him and into the net.
Sheffield Wednesday's season has been plagued with problems, including unpaid wages for the fifth time in seven months, five separate EFL embargoes, and a significant player exodus, which has forced Pedersen to assemble makeshift teams. The situation worsened when defender Dominic Iorfa was forced off with an injury just 35 minutes into the match.
In first-half stoppage time, Charlton extended their lead with a well-executed free-kick from James Bree, a Southampton loanee, who provided his third assist of the season. The ball found Burke, who powered in a header for his first goal since joining Charlton from Luton Town this summer.
