Denmark Defeats Greece, Secures Playoff Spot for Scotland
Denmark dashed Greece's hopes of World Cup qualification with a commanding victory in Copenhagen, a result that guarantees at least a playoff position for Scotland.
The Danes reclaimed the top spot in Group C on goal difference after being temporarily displaced by Scotland's earlier win over Belarus. They significantly improved their goal difference with a stellar first-half performance.
Rasmus Hojlund, currently on loan at Napoli from Manchester United, took advantage of a defensive error to put Brian Riemer's team ahead. Joachim Andersen and Mikkel Damsgaard then added two more goals before halftime.
Facing elimination, Greece intensified their efforts in the second half, with Tasos Bakasetas hitting the post. However, Club Brugge's Christos Tzolis managed to score, providing a glimmer of hope beyond goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Schmeichel was saved from conceding a second goal thanks to Andersen, who made a crucial clearance off the line from Vangelis Pavlidis' delicate effort.
Ivan Jovanovic's side found the net again, but Pavlidis was ruled offside, leaving them with too much ground to cover.
With three points from four matches, Greece now sits third in the group and cannot surpass Denmark or Scotland, both of whom have accumulated 10 points with two games remaining.
