Liverpool Defender Giovanni Leoni Faces Year-Long Injury Setback
Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni will be sidelined for a year after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), as confirmed by manager Arne Slot.
The 18-year-old sustained the injury during his debut match against Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday.
Leoni joined Liverpool in August from Parma for a transfer fee of £26 million, plus add-ons.
Slot stated, "He is not in a good place because he tore his ACL, which means he will be out for a year. Being so young, moving to a new country, and performing well in your first game makes it difficult to find positives in this situation. There is never a positive side, but we must try to focus on the fact that he is still young and has many years ahead of him after he recovers from this serious injury."
This injury leaves Slot with only three recognized center-backs: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez.
In response, Liverpool has added forward Federico Chiesa to their Champions League squad to replace Leoni.
Slot's team has won all five of their Premier League matches so far this season, defending their title successfully.
They are set to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Giovanni Leoni had to wait for his opportunity against Southampton, but he showcased the exciting potential that Liverpool fans were eager to see before his unfortunate injury cut his debut short.
Leoni made his senior debut in 2023, playing in Italy's third tier for Padova at the age of 16, and just two years later, he has joined the Premier League champions.
After selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen during the summer, Liverpool sought reinforcements in central defense, and Leoni was brought in to provide additional cover in a position where the team was potentially lacking depth.
With Virgil van Dijk now 34 years old, Liverpool must consider their future. Leoni, at just 18, not only fits this criterion but also appeared ready to contribute immediately, having established himself in Parma's starting lineup during the latter half of last season.
The chance to develop his skills with the Premier League champions and learn from Van Dijk, whom he has previously cited as his inspiration, played a crucial role in his decision to move to Liverpool.
While his injury is a significant setback, the Reds remain hopeful that the £26 million signing will return next year and work towards realizing his considerable potential.
