Middlesbrough Secures Victory Over Charlton Athletic Under Kim Hellberg
Kim Hellberg's successful tenure as Middlesbrough's manager continued with a 2-1 Championship victory against Charlton Athletic at The Valley.
Goals in the first half from Riley McGree and Morgan Whittaker ensured a comfortable evening for Boro, bringing them within five points of league leaders Coventry.
Although George Edmundson's own goal reduced the deficit nine minutes from the end, Middlesbrough held on to secure Hellberg's third win since taking over from Rob Edwards last month.
In the opening minutes, Boro's Hayden Hackney tested Charlton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski with a curling effort from the edge of the area, while at the other end, Sonny Carey had a shot saved by Sol Brynn.
Middlesbrough began to assert their dominance as the half progressed, consistently winning the ball high up the pitch. After Kaminski denied Tommy Conway, McGree broke the deadlock, finishing from Delano Burgzorg's cut-back.
Charlton appealed for a penalty when Luke Berry fell in the area, but the referee dismissed their claims.
Whittaker extended Boro's lead just before half-time with his fifth goal in five matches, slotting the ball past Kaminski at the near post after receiving a pass from McGree during a counter-attack.
After the break, Kaminski kept Charlton in contention by stopping McGree's shot, and ten minutes later, he blocked a dangerous cross from Callum Brittain.
Boro's goalkeeper Brynn was called into action with 20 minutes left when substitute Isaac Olaofe shot at his near post, forcing Brynn to tip the ball over the bar for a corner, which was subsequently cleared.
Seeking a third goal to secure the match, Boro came close when Luke Ayling's header hit the crossbar.
However, Charlton made the final moments tense when Edmundson inadvertently redirected Rob Apter's cross into his own net. Olaofe then missed a chance to equalize in stoppage time, shooting over from the edge of the area.

“The first 45 minutes were very good; we played with pace and struck the ball well. We were close to creating four or five significant chances, but we missed some crosses that could have been converted.”
“They came out with energy in the first ten minutes of the second half; however, we regained control and it felt like we had the game in hand.”
