Middlesbrough Appoints Kim Hellberg as New Head Coach
Middlesbrough has appointed Kim Hellberg as their new head coach.
The 37-year-old, previously in charge of Swedish club Hammarby, takes over from Rob Edwards, who departed for Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.
This marks Hellberg's first managerial role outside of Sweden, although he was in discussions with Championship rivals Swansea City earlier this month.
Hellberg will officially assume his duties later this week, while Adi Viveash will continue as interim head coach for the home match against Championship leaders Coventry City on Tuesday. Middlesbrough currently sits second in the league, trailing the Sky Blues by seven points after losing only two of their 16 league matches this season.
This is Boro's second managerial appointment in five months, following Edwards' exit after just 14 games at the Riverside Stadium.
During his tenure at Hammarby, Hellberg achieved consecutive second-place finishes in Sweden's top division, the Allsvenskan.
Having played in the lower leagues of Sweden, Hellberg had a year remaining on his contract with Hammarby before his move.
He began his coaching career in the Swedish lower divisions with Kuddby IF and later IF Sylvia, before joining the staff at top-tier club IFK Norrköping in 2020. His first head coaching position in the Allsvenskan was at IFK Värnamo, where he enjoyed two successful seasons before moving to Hammarby.
Hellberg will be joined at Teesside by his assistant, David Selini, while Viveash will remain part of the coaching staff.
More updates will follow.
