Millwall Secures Narrow Victory Over Sheffield United
Millwall intensified the pressure on Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles with a narrow 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane, leaving the Blades still in search of their first win of the season.
A first-half goal from Millwall's Lee Cundle, combined with an outstanding second-half performance by goalkeeper Steven Benda, ensured that the Lions took all three points despite Sheffield's attempts to equalize.
This defeat leaves Selles, who took over from Chris Wilder during the summer, without a point or a win after three league losses and an exit from the cup at the hands of Birmingham City. His team now sits at the bottom of the Championship table.
The home crowd expressed their frustration with boos after a lackluster first-half performance from the Blades, during which Cundle managed to beat the offside trap to score just seven minutes before the break.
Although the final whistle was met with further discontent, Selles' side was unfortunate not to secure at least a point, as Millwall required a stellar effort from Benda to claim their second win in three league matches.
Despite the loss, Sheffield United's boss can find some positives in the improved second-half performance, where Louie Barry and Gus Hamer were both thwarted by exceptional saves from Benda. The goalkeeper also made a full-stretch save to deny Callum O'Hare.
Harrison Burrows struck the inside of the post, with the ball rebounding across the goal line and out of play, while Tyrese Campbell had a header cleared off the line by Tristan Crama.
However, the disappointing start to the season for a team that finished last year with 90 points, trailing only promoted Leeds and Burnley, has not gone unnoticed by the fans.
Starting the day just one place above financially troubled rivals Sheffield Wednesday, they now find themselves in 24th position.
Sheffield United began the match brightly but failed to challenge Benda in goal for Millwall. Although there were questions about the offside status of Cundle's goal, the Lions had earned their lead by that stage.
They could have extended their advantage when Josh Coburn's long-range shot was deflected wide, or when Mihailo Ivanovic squandered a golden opportunity just before the hour mark.
From that point onward, the hosts maintained relentless pressure until the final whistle, but Millwall successfully kept Sheffield United at bay to secure the victory.
