Millwall Triumphs Over Bristol City with Late Winner
Macaulay Langstaff came off the bench to score a late winner as Millwall defeated Bristol City for the second time in a month in the Championship.
Camiel Neghli opened the scoring for the Lions early in the match, but Adam Randell equalized shortly after halftime with his first goal for the Robins.
Gerhard Struber's side controlled possession and created significantly more opportunities than their opponents, converting both of their shots on target.
The previous encounter at Ashton Gate earlier this month ended in controversy, with both clubs facing FA charges after a post-match brawl. Millwall won that match 1-0, marking their second victory over Bristol City this season, thanks to Langstaff's decisive strike in the 81st minute.
Just as he did in the first Championship game of the season against Norwich, Langstaff emerged from the bench to secure a 2-1 victory for Millwall.
The former Notts County striker has struggled since joining the club 18 months ago, scoring only once in his first season and totaling three goals in 51 league appearances. He entered the game with Millwall under pressure, having managed just two shots, with Neghli's deflected effort being their only shot on target.
Despite being behind at halftime, the Robins quickly leveled the match after the break, with Randell finding the net and scoring his first goal since joining from Plymouth Argyle in the summer.
Millwall manager Alex Neil utilized all his substitutes to shift the game's momentum in his team's favor late on. Ryan Leonard, Langstaff, Danny McNamara, Joe Bryan, and Thierno Ballo were all brought on, with Ballo making a significant impact.
The tactical changes included switching to a back five at times, showcasing Millwall's adaptability as they continue to impress in the Championship.
The winning goal came from a combination of three substitutes: Neghli's clever through ball was laid off by Mihailo Ivanovic to Ballo, who then passed to McNamara, whose deflected cross found Langstaff, who finished past Bristol City goalkeeper Max O'Leary.
While the Lions did not perform at their best for much of the evening, the victory leaves them fifth in the league table, while Bristol City remains in eighth place.
For the second time in less than a month, Bristol City left the pitch without points against Millwall.
Ivanovic's goal had secured three points for Millwall at Ashton Gate on December 6, but that match was marred by a post-match brawl that resulted in both clubs facing charges, and Harry Cornick receiving a three-match ban for violent conduct.
In this encounter, tempers remained under control, but Struber will again lament his team's inability to secure a result against the Lions, despite dominating possession with nearly 60% and taking 14 shots, only three of which were on target.
The match could have turned out differently, as the Robins made a strong start to the second half and earned their equalizer. They nearly took the lead just a minute later, but Sinclair Armstrong's shot hit the side netting instead of finding the back of the net, while Max Vyner also missed a good heading opportunity with the score level.
Millwall manager Alex Neil commented on the match to BBC Radio London:
"The game really shifted in our favor when we brought the likes of [Thierno] Ballo on. It was nice to see Macca [Macaulay Langstaff] get the winning goal. Camiel Neghli's work rate was incredible. Many players delivered strong performances. What I can say about the team is that they never give up; they have a lot of resilience. There were moments in the second half when we struggled, and the fans grew anxious. However, we regained control and managed to secure the winner. We maintain our determination until the final whistle, and that gives us a chance to succeed."
