Morecambe Triumphs in Emotional Season Opener Under New Ownership
Daniel Ogwuru scored in the eighth minute of stoppage time, securing a dramatic victory for Morecambe against Altrincham in their first match under the new ownership of Panjab Warriors.
Morecambe supporters had been anxious about the future of their club until the Panjab Warriors' takeover was finalized earlier this month. Following the green light for the acquisition, a hectic week ensued, culminating in the appointment of rookie manager Ashvir Singh Johal, the first Sikh to manage a British professional club, who replaced Derek Adams. During this period, over ten new players were signed.
Ogwuru, who was signed just days prior to the match, was brought on by Johal midway through the second half and made an immediate impact, finishing low into the net to secure three vital points in Morecambe's delayed season opener.
The past week has been eventful for Morecambe, with the National League officially confirming the Panjab Warriors' takeover on Sunday, which lifted the club's suspension. Following the change in ownership, Adams was dismissed, and Johal was appointed as the new head coach.
Once the transfer embargo was lifted on Wednesday, several new signings were made, yet it was a member of the existing squad who netted the first goal under the new regime.
With over 3,000 Morecambe fans in attendance, last season's player of the year, Ben Tollitt, initiated the scoring by advancing the ball forward. After his initial shot was saved by Altrincham's goalkeeper Luke Hutchinson, Tollitt capitalized on the rebound, sending the home crowd into a frenzy just eight minutes into the match.
Former Morecambe loanee Archie Mair, now signed permanently, was called into action shortly after, saving a shot from Jimmy Knowles, while Harry Panayiotou also came close for the hosts.
Altrincham, who finished ninth last season, responded effectively. Knowles broke away to score in the 35th minute, leveling the match at 1-1 by halftime.

In a tense finale, a combination of Mair and Jake Cain thwarted efforts from Lewis Banks and Kahrel Azariah Reddin, but the climax came when Tollitt advanced again, setting up Ogwuru, who skillfully drilled the ball into the bottom corner, igniting wild celebrations among the home supporters on this momentous day for Morecambe.
