Mural of Trent Alexander-Arnold Vandalized Ahead of Liverpool Clash
A mural of Trent Alexander-Arnold has been vandalized as the Real Madrid right-back prepares to face his former club, Liverpool, on Tuesday.
In May, some fans expressed their displeasure by booing the Liverpool academy product after he announced his decision to leave his hometown club when his contract expired in June.
The 27-year-old subsequently joined Real Madrid, who are now set to play an away match against Liverpool in the group stage of this season's Champions League.
The mural of the England defender was unveiled near Anfield following Liverpool's victory in the 2019 UEFA Champions League and had previously been vandalized earlier this year with the word 'Rat' scrawled across it.
On Tuesday, the same word appeared again multiple times, along with the phrase 'adios el rata.' In addition, white paint was thrown over the mural, though the graffiti was quickly removed.
On Monday, Alexander-Arnold participated in a visit to the Anfield memorial for Diogo Jota, where he laid flowers in memory of his former Liverpool teammate.
Before the match on Tuesday, Alexander-Arnold commented, "Whatever way I’m received is the decision of the fans. I’ll always love the club, I’ll always be a fan of the club. I’ll always be thankful for the opportunities and the things we achieved together - they’ll live with me forever."
During his time with Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold won the Champions League, two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the EFL Cup.
The club has been contacted for a statement regarding the vandalism.
