Newcastle United Triumphs Over Leeds United in Thrilling Encounter
Newcastle United forward Harvey Barnes scored a stunning winner in the 102nd minute, bringing an end to Leeds United's unbeaten streak in a thrilling Premier League match.
The game appeared destined to end in a draw after Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes converted a penalty, leveling the score at 3-3 in the dying seconds of regular time at St James' Park.
However, in a dramatic twist, Barnes found the net amidst a crowded penalty area during stoppage time, igniting wild celebrations among the home fans.
The atmosphere was charged with emotion as Newcastle supporters chanted the name of club legend Kevin Keegan, who is currently battling cancer. Keegan, a pivotal figure in the club's history, made a lasting impact as both a player and manager, famously leading the team during their title challenge in 1996.
This exhilarating match was marked by goals, drama, and some adventurous defending, beginning with Leeds breaking the deadlock due to an error by Malick Thiaw.
Thiaw slipped under pressure from Dominic Calvert-Lewin deep in Newcastle's half, allowing the Leeds forward to set up Brenden Aaronson, who expertly found the bottom corner from outside the box in the 32nd minute.
The goal jolted Newcastle into action, and they quickly equalized through Barnes, who scored with a precise sidefooted finish after receiving a clever layoff from Nick Woltemade inside the box.
Leeds regained their lead just before halftime when Thiaw, struggling under pressure, handled the ball in the area during a tussle with Calvert-Lewin. The latter calmly converted the penalty, sending goalkeeper Nick Pope the wrong way for his ninth goal of the season.
Newcastle responded strongly in the second half, with Joelinton heading in the equalizer following a brilliant assist from Guimaraes, who used the outside of his boot.
Leeds took the lead again in the 79th minute, with Aaronson scoring an angled finish after Ilia Gruev capitalized on a misplaced pass from Yoane Wissa.
Yet, there was still time for Guimaraes to score a penalty, setting the stage for Barnes's late winner, which propelled Newcastle to sixth place in the standings, while Leeds remained in 16th.
