Nottingham Forest Shows Signs of Revival with Win Over Leeds
Nottingham Forest, affectionately known as the Tricky Trees by their supporters, are beginning to demonstrate signs of revival.
Manager Sean Dyche secured his second victory in five matches, contrasting with Ange Postecoglou's winless streak of eight games. Dyche will be grateful for the opportunity to face a struggling Leeds United, which helped him achieve his first Premier League win.
Following a 2-0 triumph over Porto in his Europa League debut, Dyche experienced a mix of results, including a draw against Manchester United. However, Sunday's 3-1 victory at home against fellow relegation contenders Leeds has brought them within just one point of escaping the relegation zone.
Although they remain a shadow of the team that qualified for the Europa League last season and briefly threatened the Champions League spots, this improvement is significant after a dismal start to the season.
"It’s a sign of a changing mentality," Dyche remarked. "We are on a run of one loss in five now, and it feels good to regain that winning feeling. I’m very pleased for everyone. The players have openly discussed the challenges they’ve faced."
BBC Match of the Day analyst Danny Murphy commented, "It was a monumental day for Forest. This felt like a crucial match for Dyche, especially going into the international break and seeking his first Premier League victory. He has achieved that, and the manner in which they played was very positive."
Gibbs-White Continues to Impress Following Early Criticism
Dyche has experience managing tough Premier League squads at Burnley and Everton, but he now has some real talents at his disposal in this Forest team, which largely mirrors the squad that finished seventh last season.
Captain Morgan Gibbs-White, who faced criticism from fans after failing to secure a move to Tottenham over the summer and delivering subpar performances early in the season, appears to be regaining his form under Dyche. He has scored three goals in five matches, although he missed a penalty against Sturm Graz on Thursday.
Gibbs-White netted a header from Omari Hutchinson’s cross to give Forest a 2-1 lead and received a standing ovation when substituted in the 88th minute. Notably, four of Gibbs-White's last five Premier League goals have come from headers, with only Brentford's Kevin Schade scoring more headed goals in the league this calendar year.
"He scored again, which is what we want from our players," Dyche stated. "He’s focused on his game, and the external noise has faded. He’s been professional, and I’ve encouraged him to return to the basics and enjoy his play."
Dyche is also awaiting the return of winger Callum Hudson-Odoi and prolific striker Chris Wood from injury.
Proactive Substitutions Lift Forest to Victory
Until the hour mark, it seemed Forest might settle for a frustrating 1-1 draw, which would have altered the narrative following a previous loss to Bournemouth and a draw with Manchester United.
Murphy commented, "If the result had gone the other way, discontent would have been palpable, especially at home, with just one point from three Premier League matches. But Dyche’s timely substitutions changed the game. He introduced Hutchinson, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Ryan Yates in the 59th minute, instantly energizing the City Ground crowd with an infusion of positivity."
Summer signing Hutchinson played a pivotal role in both goals, assisting Gibbs-White and winning a penalty. Murphy noted, "Being proactive won the game for Dyche, showcasing his willingness to leverage the quality of his squad to secure a win rather than merely protecting their lead. This shift in approach is commendable, and now the mood has changed. Everyone is looking up the table, realizing they are just one win away from escaping the relegation zone."
Leeds Faces Concerns After Disappointing Performance
Leeds initially took the lead in the 13th minute with a clean strike from Lukas Nmecha but failed to register another shot on target until the final 20 minutes of the match. Their lead was short-lived, as Ibrahim Sangare equalized just three minutes later. Manager Daniel Farke acknowledged that conceding the lead too early was a "key moment" in the match.
Despite their efforts, Leeds struggled to create significant chances, with their only away win this season coming against bottom-placed Wolves. What could have expanded their gap over the relegation zone to four points has now shrunk to just one.
Like Forest, Leeds improved after making substitutions, with Daniel James and Dominic Calvert-Lewin the only players to force saves from Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels. Farke commented, "Football at this level is decided by small details, and we must remain alert. Our home form is crucial, and we could have made things easier with some away points. I anticipated a challenging period, and we have conceded too many goals in our last two away matches."
