Postecoglou Faces Pressure After Nottingham Forest's Europa League Defeat
Ange Postecoglou has remained resolute despite calls for his dismissal from Nottingham Forest fans following a disappointing start to his tenure.
The team's recent 3-2 defeat in the Europa League against Midtjylland leaves Postecoglou winless in his first six matches in charge, marking the first time in a century that a permanent manager at Forest has failed to secure a victory in their opening six games.
As the visitors netted a late third goal at the City Ground, frustrated supporters chanted, "You’re getting sacked in the morning," directed at the former Tottenham manager.
Postecoglou acknowledged the fans' discontent, stating, "The fans are disappointed. They are allowed to have an opinion on it. I heard their opinion." He faced jeers as he exited down the tunnel at full-time.
Reflecting on the situation, he added, "Nothing surprises me in football. It’s the climate we’re in. It seems that’s the way things are going. It’s nothing I can control."
Just over four months ago, Postecoglou lifted a trophy with Spurs, but was dismissed shortly after due to a lackluster domestic season. Now, he finds himself grappling with similar challenges at Forest.
The match marked the first European game at the City Ground in 29 years, and the atmosphere turned sour as fans began to blame Postecoglou before the final whistle. Supporters even sang in praise of Nuno Espirito Santo, his predecessor, who is now with West Ham. Nuno had led Forest to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season before parting ways with the club due to a breakdown in relations with owner Evangelos Marinakis.
The loss to Midtjylland followed a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland in the Premier League, further dampening the mood among Forest supporters, who are also beginning to question Marinakis.
Postecoglou stated, "My responsibility is to ensure we achieve wins for this football club and progress it. I would prefer if people were optimistic about what I’m doing. I can only change that by winning games of football. Irrespective, that’s not going to change my approach. I truly believe in the process we are undertaking and I don’t think we are far from becoming the team that can overcome the current situation and secure results."
Despite investing around £180 million in the summer to build upon last season's success, Forest has struggled under Postecoglou, who took over on September 9 after Nuno's departure.
Postecoglou remains hopeful, asserting, "Yes, I do believe we are close to a breakthrough. Nothing I observed tonight changes that. I understand the prevailing mood isn’t great, particularly towards me, but this isn’t unfamiliar territory for me. I believe we are on the right track, and once we navigate through this period of uncertainty, we will be on a good path."
Forest's late-game efforts included a stoppage-time penalty by Chris Wood, but it was not enough to salvage the match after conceding first-half goals from Ousmane Diao and Mads Bech, alongside Dan Ndoye’s equalizer.
Following a 2-2 draw with Real Betis last week, Forest will next face Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday before the international break.
Postecoglou remarked, "It’s a really poor outcome for us. It was an important night for many reasons, and we let ourselves down in key moments, making it difficult to secure a win. If you allow the opposition to score every time they approach your goal, it’s going to be hard to win games of football."
Will Postecoglou Be Given Time?
Marinakis has a reputation for making swift managerial changes if he perceives things are not progressing. He previously dismissed ex-Huddersfield manager Carlos Corberan after just 48 days at Olympiacos, and Nuno's exit came shortly after he signed a new three-year deal.
The focus now shifts to Postecoglou. Former Forest and West Ham striker Michail Antonio stated on TNT Sports, "I believe he will receive additional time because he was appointed by the owner. He will be given extra time to implement his philosophy, as it currently seems he is struggling to convey his tactics to the players."
Martin O’Neill, former manager of Forest and Leicester, added, "Wins are the name of the game – it’s as simple as that. The crowd was already against him in many respects, but we are only six games in; you’d hardly know the name of the tea lady after that amount of time."
On the boos directed at Postecoglou, O’Neill commented, "You have to manage the noise around you. You can’t let it dictate everything, but you can’t ignore it either."
