Rangers Consider Reappointing Steven Gerrard as Manager
Rangers are considering the reappointment of Steven Gerrard as their next manager while they await confirmation of his interest in returning to Ibrox.
In a recent interview with former England teammate Rio Ferdinand, the Liverpool legend expressed his desire to return to management, stating that he wants to be part of a team that is competitive and capable of winning, as he believes this aligns better with his ambitions.
The club is in the process of selecting a new head coach following the dismissal of Russell Martin, who managed to secure only five victories in 17 matches.
Gerrard is among the candidates being considered by the Ibrox management as they work to finalize their shortlist. The club's American owners had previously shown interest in the 45-year-old after their takeover in the summer; however, various issues led to Gerrard stepping back from the running.
In his interview on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Podcast, the former Anfield captain revealed that he had received "five or six really interesting phone calls" since leaving Saudi club Al-Ettifaq in January. He mentioned that he has not felt ready to return because he lacks a coaching team and that the timing has not been appropriate.
Gerrard noted, "My daughter just had a baby, so I’ve just become a granddad. I wasn’t ready. I haven’t got my staff ready. Unfortunately, those opportunities have come at the wrong time for me."
However, he remains open to the right opportunity, stating, "If the right call comes my way, the right club, the right challenge, and I’ve got my people set, which I will have at some point, I’ll take that challenge on because it’s in me."
Gerrard managed Rangers from 2018 to 2021, culminating in a league title during his final season. He acknowledged, "I know where I’m strong, and I know there are areas where I need good support and special skill sets to enhance my effectiveness as a manager."
Reflecting on his time at Rangers, he expressed confidence in his coaching team, including Gary McAllister and Michael Beale. He added, "A lot of coaching changes at Aston Villa and in Saudi Arabia didn’t help me personally. I’d love another opportunity at some point."
Gerrard is eager to return to management with new ideas and a refreshed approach, stating, "I want to change a few things and improve a few things and come back fresh, with a few different people around me. I’m currently enjoying family time and engaging in activities I haven’t been able to do, but I still feel there’s unfinished business in terms of facing new challenges."
