Wrexham Triumphs Over Hull City in EFL Cup After Penalty Shootout
Substitute Ollie Palmer's stoppage-time goals saved Wrexham, who ultimately triumphed over Hull City in a thrilling penalty shootout during the first round of the EFL Cup.
Elliot Lee's deflected shot gave Wrexham an early lead, but Oli McBurnie's first goal for Hull quickly equalized the match.
Hull, celebrating their 150th game in the competition, saw substitutes Joel Ndala and Matt Crooks score in the second half.
However, two dramatic stoppage-time goals from Wrexham's Palmer sent the game into penalties, where Ndala's miss allowed the hosts to secure a 5-3 victory in the shootout.
Wrexham made 11 changes from their opening day loss to Southampton, featuring Ryan Hardie on his home debut, while Hull made six changes, including first starts for McBurnie and Nathan Tinsdale.
Before kickoff, the Stok Cae Ras stadium observed a moment of silence in memory of Wrexham legend Joey Jones, who passed away in July at the age of 70.
Both teams began the match with fervor on a warm evening in North Wales, with McBurnie narrowly missing the target with a header.
Hull's goalkeeper Dillon Phillips comfortably collected efforts from Hardie and Sam Smith, while Wrexham's Arthur Okonkwo was alert to parry McBurnie's shot.
The match was evenly contested until Lee broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark with a deflected shot that looped over Phillips.
However, the lead was short-lived as Cody Drameh's strong run set up McBurnie to score, leveling the match just five minutes later.
Hardie missed a header wide shortly after the second half began, and Okonkwo denied Kasey Palmer before Wrexham's Harry Ashfield also missed the target from the edge of the area.
Hull took the lead with 20 minutes remaining when Ndala scored from close range following a right-wing cross from Joe Gelhardt, with the away supporters taking a moment to realize they were ahead.
They extended their advantage nine minutes from time when Palmer's excellent cross found Crooks, who tapped in Hull's third goal, seemingly securing their place in the next round.
Yet, Wrexham's own Palmer came to the rescue, scoring two powerful headers in stoppage time to revitalize the home crowd and force the match to penalties.
In the shootout, Palmer, along with James McClean, Lee, Josh Windass, and Jack Marriott, converted their kicks, while Ndala struck the woodwork with Hull's second attempt.
