Coventry City Extends Lead at Top of Championship with Victory over Sheffield United
Championship leaders Coventry City overcame a first-half deficit to secure a 3-1 victory against struggling Sheffield United, extending their lead at the top of the table to four points.
The visitors initially took the lead when former Sky Blues defender Sam McCallum scored from close range after Ben Mee flicked on Sydie Peck's corner.
Sheffield United was forced to make a goalkeeping change at halftime due to an injury to Michael Cooper, who was replaced by Adam Davies. His first task was to retrieve the ball from the net after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto capitalized on a defensive lapse to score a low finish from a long throw.
Frank Lampard's side then took the lead when Davies misjudged a punch from Victor Torp's corner, allowing Bobby Thomas' header to cross the line.
Haji Wright broke through the offside trap and selflessly squared the ball for Brandon Thomas-Asante, who sealed the victory with the final kick of the game.
Despite suffering their first defeat of the season against Wrexham on Friday, this win puts Coventry five points ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough.
With three more goals, Coventry has now scored a total of 39 this season, the highest in the top four divisions of English football, while no other team has surpassed 27 goals.
Sheffield United remains in the relegation zone, sitting third from bottom, having lost 11 of their first 14 matches—more defeats than they incurred throughout the entire 2024-25 season.
Lampard responded to the setback against Wrexham by making five changes to his starting lineup, while Chris Wilder made two adjustments to the team that lost to Derby at home on Saturday.
McCallum's goal came somewhat against the run of play, boosting the away side's morale. Peck had a chance to double their lead before halftime, but a block from Thomas reduced the threat.
Coventry's best opportunity in the first half came during added time when Wright had a header that Cooper managed to hold onto. However, that was Cooper's last action of the match as he did not return after halftime.
Davies, who had not played since August 2024, had little chance to stop Sakamoto's goal shortly after the break, although Wilder would have been disappointed with his team's failure to address a long throw that lacked power.
Davies was at fault for Coventry's second goal when he misjudged Torp's corner, allowing Thomas to put the home side ahead just after the hour mark.
From that point on, Coventry controlled the match, although Sheffield United applied some late pressure without significantly testing goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
In the dying moments, substitute Jamie Allen set Wright free behind the visitors' defense—though there was a suspicion of offside—and the USA international assisted Thomas-Asante for a simple finish into an empty net.
Coventry City will host second-placed Stoke on Saturday, while Sheffield United, who have become the first second-tier team since Wimbledon in the 2003-04 season to lose 11 of their opening 14 games, will face QPR.
