Excitement Builds for the 110th East Anglia Derby
The anticipation is palpable as Ipswich Town prepares to face Norwich City in the 110th East Anglia derby this Sunday. Their last encounter, just 18 months ago, saw Norwich secure a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Marcelino Nunez.
As the teams gear up for this weekend's clash, only seven of the 29 players who participated in that April 2024 match at Carrow Road remain in their respective squads.
Since that encounter, Ipswich has experienced a tumultuous season in the Premier League, marked by just one victory and 14 defeats in their final 18 matches. Meanwhile, Norwich, after reaching the play-offs in the 2023-24 season, has struggled to find consistency, lingering mostly in mid-table as they seek a return to the top flight, where they last played in 2022.
This derby is particularly significant for both clubs, especially for their managers, Kieran McKenna and Liam Manning. McKenna aims to revive the positive momentum that led to back-to-back promotions in 2023 and 2024. He has brought in 11 new players over the summer, including Nunez for a reported £10 million.
On the other hand, Manning has also revamped the Canaries' squad with 12 new signings but is still working to maximize their potential.
This significant turnover in players could explain why neither team is currently among the frontrunners in the league.
'Man for man we're better' - Mills
After a slow start to the season, where Ipswich secured only three points from their first four matches, they have shown improvement, collecting seven points from their last three games, not including a match abandoned due to heavy rain at Blackburn Rovers.
Former Town captain Mick Mills, an expert on derby matches, believes that a victory for Ipswich—its first over Norwich in 16 years—could serve as a catalyst for the remainder of the season. He highlighted the unique atmosphere surrounding derby day, noting, "As you drive to the stadium, there's something extra special about what's going on in the streets. Inside, everybody is noisier and more excited—it really is different." He expressed confidence in Ipswich's potential, stating, "Man for man, we probably are better than them. It's at home, which makes a difference, and it’s far easier at Portman Road than it is at Carrow Road. We have everything going in our favor." Mills added, "It would take a poor performance for us not to beat them. If we can beat Norwich, there’ll be no stopping us."
'There's a fine line in derbies' - Manning
For Norwich, playing the first derby of the season at Ipswich may be advantageous, as their two victories this season have come away from home. They have struggled at Carrow Road, losing all five of their home games in league and cup competitions. Thus, the match at Portman Road represents a "free hit" for Manning, although it could heighten the pressure if the result does not go in their favor.
Former Norwich striker Iwan Roberts remarked, "When he signed as the club's new head coach, I bet he never imagined losing his first five home games. He needs to turn it around, and it’s as simple as that." Manning has emphasized the need for his players to channel their passion and emotion while maintaining control and composure. He stated, "There's always a fine line in derbies, and that bandwidth of control probably gets a little smaller because people are so fired up."
Reflecting on his dual connection to both clubs, Manning expressed his excitement for the match, saying, "I'm fortunate to do what I do, and I'm very privileged. I can't wait; I'm really looking forward to it. We're desperate to win and head into the international break with positive momentum." Meanwhile, Roberts suggests that tactical flexibility may be crucial for Norwich to start climbing the table.
Nunez Switch Adds Extra Dimension
Interestingly, similar criticisms can be leveled at Ipswich's recent performance, particularly in their first half against Bristol City. While they dominated possession, they lacked the attacking urgency to pose a serious threat, aside from occasional bursts from Jack Clarke. Nunez made his first start for Ipswich in that match, and McKenna was pleased with his contribution, stating, "Marcelino was a big part of us getting control at the start of the game, linking us together with some good passes."
While several players have transitioned between the two clubs, few have done so directly. Much attention will be on Nunez, whether he starts or comes off the bench. Canaries defender Jack Stacey acknowledged the shock surrounding Nunez's departure, noting, "I can imagine they might not have many nice things to say to him on Sunday, but that’s part of football."
