Folarin Balogun Scores First Champions League Goal in Monaco's Victory
Folarin Balogun's inaugural Champions League goal secured Monaco's first victory of this season's league phase against 10-man Bodo/Glimt.
After impressive draws against Manchester City and Tottenham in the second and third matchdays, the French side entered the match with confidence. They dominated possession but faced challenges in breaking down a resolute home defense.
Former Liverpool forward Takumi Minamino created the best early opportunity, but his long-range shot was blocked at the edge of the box. Additionally, Mohammed Salisu's last-ditch block denied Bodo captain Patrick Berg's goalbound volley.
As the teams appeared set to head into halftime scoreless, Balogun delivered a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock. The United States international made a forward run to meet Maghnes Akliouche's through-ball, then shifted the ball onto his left foot and fired it high into the near post, beyond goalkeeper Nikita Haikin.
Following the break, Bodo sought to extend their nine-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, but their efforts were in vain. Jens Petter Hauge's curling free-kick was thwarted by a sprawling save from Philipp Kohn, and Kasper Høgh squandered another golden opportunity by shooting wide of the far post.
As time dwindled and desperation grew for the home side, substitute Jostein Gundersen received a red card. Initially booked for a reckless sliding tackle from behind, a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) review resulted in the yellow card being upgraded to a straight red.
This dismissal dashed Bodo's hopes of salvaging anything from a hard-fought match, leaving them winless after four games.
Looking ahead to Matchday five, Bodo/Glimt will host Italian giants Juventus at Aspmyra on Tuesday, November 25, at 20:00 GMT, while Monaco will travel to Cyprus to face Pafos FC on Wednesday, November 26, at 17:45 GMT.
