Southampton Seeks New Manager After Will Still's Dismissal
Following the dismissal of Will Still after just five months in charge, Southampton's ownership group, Sport Republic, is tasked with finding a sixth new manager since taking control in January 2022.
Under the leadership of chairman Dragan Solak, the club has faced challenges, including two relegations marked by consecutive 20th-place finishes in the Premier League, before winning promotion back to the top flight for the 2023-24 season.
Despite a rocky start to the current season, there are still 31 Championship matches remaining, providing ample opportunities to secure points in a league known for late promotion runs.
The pressing question remains: who will step into the managerial role to guide this new chapter at St Mary's Stadium?
Sport Republic's Managerial Challenges
Southampton was viewed as a strong contender for promotion at the season's outset, but results have fallen short of expectations. Before Still's departure, the team had secured only two wins and was precariously positioned just above the relegation zone. However, interim manager Tonda Eckert has brought a glimmer of hope with back-to-back victories last week.
The next full-time manager will follow in the footsteps of Nathan Jones, Ruben Selles, Russell Martin, Ivan Juric, and Still as a permanent appointment by Sport Republic. Pressure has been mounting on chairman Solak and the Saints board, with fans increasingly voicing their discontent.
Southampton supporter Rob Maddox expressed frustration, stating, "I believe Sport Republic has erred in hiring managers ill-suited to the club's current circumstances. The choice of Nathan Jones was particularly misguided, as he lacked Premier League experience and the necessary skills to keep us afloat. Bringing in Ivan Juric, who also lacked top-level experience, ultimately led to our relegation with a near-record low points total. I had high hopes for Will Still, but it seems he couldn't adapt his style to fit the squad's needs. We require someone with a strong background in English football who can easily adjust."
Potential Candidates for the Managerial Role
A number of names have surfaced as potential candidates for the vacant managerial position, including former managers Martin and Ralph Hasenhuttl. Hasenhuttl, who managed the team from 2018 to 2022, was seen at the recent match against Bristol City.
Another candidate mentioned is Gary O'Neil, the former Wolves and Bournemouth manager, who has been without a job since his dismissal from Wolves in December 2024. However, fans expressed mixed feelings about O'Neil's potential appointment during their victory over Sheffield Wednesday, given his history with local rivals Portsmouth.
Adam Blackmore, sports editor at BBC Radio Solent, remarked, "The days following Still's sacking have been intriguing. It seems the media has been gauging fan reactions to names like Russell Martin, Ralph Hasenhuttl, and former Portsmouth player Gary O'Neil. Personally, I consider all three unlikely candidates for the Southampton managerial role, although O'Neil appears to be the most viable option. The interim success of Eckert has provided the board with the luxury of time to make a decision, and it has also opened the door for Eckert to be considered for the position."
Eckert's Impressive Interim Performance
In the midst of the uncertainty, interim manager Eckert has been making a strong case for himself. The 32-year-old German, previously the U21s manager, has secured six points from his first two league matches in charge. Following Still's dismissal, Eckert led the Saints to a 2-1 victory against QPR and a convincing win over Sheffield Wednesday.
After the match against Wednesday, Eckert was seen celebrating with sporting director Johannes Spors, with whom he has history from his time at Genoa. Eckert's coaching experience includes roles at Red Bull Salzburg, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and assistant positions at Barnsley and Genoa.
Blackmore added, "While appointing another young, inexperienced manager like Eckert might seem risky, one cannot overlook the impact he has had on the board and the squad following these two victories."
Assessment of the Squad and Striker Challenges
One glaring issue within Southampton's current squad is the lack of attacking prowess. In recent weeks, forward Leo Scienza has emerged as a key threat, while wide players Finn Azaz and Tom Fellows have effectively combined for goals. However, the central attacking position appears to be a weak link.
Ross Stewart seemed poised to claim that role after a standout performance against Sheffield United, where he scored twice. Unfortunately, he has since suffered another injury and is not expected to return until 2026. Adam Armstrong currently leads the team in scoring with five goals in 17 matches, but the drop-off in goal contributions is significant, with four players netting only two goals and another four managing just one each. American striker Damion Downs has struggled with confidence and has yet to score since joining from Wolfsburg in July.
In his final days, Still voiced concerns about a lack of accountability within the dressing room, questioning whether players were adequately scrutinizing their performances amid the team's struggles. Maddox noted, "The players must elevate their effort levels. For instance, Taylor Harwood-Bellis has had a fantastic week and performed well, so why was he not showing that same tenacity under Will Still? I believe some players pick and choose their efforts; not all, but some are guilty of this. Sport Republic needs to find someone with the right personality to manage this group."
The Future for Southampton's New Manager
Whoever the next manager may be, recent developments have provided reason for optimism. The club invested significantly in Azaz and Fellows over the summer, two players who have begun to demonstrate their potential. Midfielder Shea Charles had an impressive loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last season, while Scienza has showcased his abilities since arriving late in the transfer window. Additionally, Harwood-Bellis and Nathan Wood possess the talent to be among the Championship's top defenders.
While challenges remain, there is a foundation of promise within the squad, and the new manager will have an opportunity to build upon this potential.
