Manchester City Fans Celebrate Debut of Heskey Brothers
When the traveling Manchester City fans at Huddersfield chanted the names of Yaya and Kolo Toure, they likely did not anticipate witnessing another pair of brothers take the pitch shortly thereafter.
After Pep Guardiola's team took a 2-0 lead against their League One opponents in the Carabao Cup, the manager turned to his bench and called forward brothers Reigan and Jaden Heskey, sons of former England striker Emile Heskey.
Following instructions from a bench that included Kolo Toure, now part of City's coaching staff, the fans were treated to the sight of the Heskey brothers making their first-team debuts for the club, a decade after their father last appeared in the EFL Cup.
“Today, six players from the academy made the starting XI,” Guardiola remarked. “Two more came on, the Heskey brothers. I think their father and mother will be so proud of their kids. That’s really cool.”
Reigan, 17, is described on the City website as a “tricky, clinical winger,” while Jaden, two years older, is recognized as a “mature, hard-working” box-to-box midfielder.
Both brothers regularly feature in City’s academy teams, with Jaden often wearing the captain's armband in Premier League 2 matches. In 2024, he scored during City's 4-0 victory over Leeds, securing the FA Youth Cup.
“They’re similar to me,” Emile Heskey told the Mail in August. “They are both very athletic. The younger one is very quick, while the older one is a bit of a beast like I was. They’ve both got similar attributes.”
In the match against Huddersfield, Jaden played for 14 minutes, replacing fellow academy graduate Nico O'Reilly, while Reigan came on shortly after for Savinho.
Earlier in the match, Phil Foden, arguably City’s most accomplished youth graduate in recent years, once again stood out. The midfielder, who faced challenges last season due to off-field issues and injuries, is showing signs of rediscovering the form that earned him the Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year awards in 2024.
This season, Foden has scored two goals and provided two assists in five games, playing a pivotal role in Wednesday’s victory at Accu Stadium.
Guardiola noted, “We have already seen Phil in the last few games against Arsenal, Napoli, and Manchester United; he was really good. When the team plays better, every player reaches their potential, but it’s not just today. He can play in pockets perfectly, but when he has a little freedom, he gives you something unique.”
Despite facing League One opposition, Foden displayed a level of skill that was unmatched on the field. His goal against the Terriers showcased a player brimming with confidence, as he exchanged passes with debutant Divine Mukasa before delivering a precise finish.
Foden, playing his fourth match in 11 days, was eager to demonstrate his abilities, orchestrating play by distributing the ball effectively to teammates. He exhibited keen awareness by assisting Savinho, who scored the second goal and secured City’s advancement to the fourth round of the competition, where they will face Championship side Swansea.
“Phil Foden was instrumental in everything Manchester City did,” former England international Sue Smith stated on BBC Radio 5 Live. “It’s great to see him back and performing at this level. Last season was difficult for him due to injuries and other factors, but when he’s at his best, he’s unstoppable.”
Teammate Rico Lewis echoed Smith's sentiments, saying that Foden's happiness contributes to his success on the pitch. “Everyone has seen how good a player he is in previous years,” Lewis said. “The main thing is he has his confidence back, and the goals will follow. He just needs to keep doing what he’s doing and, most importantly, be happy because when he is happy, he performs well.”
City will host Burnley on Saturday, followed by away matches against Monaco and Brentford before the international break. Foden will be hoping to impress further to earn a recall to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, having earned 45 caps, the last of which came in March against Latvia.
Additionally, Kalvin Phillips made his return to the team, appearing in a City shirt for the first time since December 19, 2023, at the Club World Cup, a moment Guardiola described as “good.” Phillips traveled to Huddersfield from London after welcoming his second son, Ari.
Both Heskey brothers and Phillips will be looking to secure more playing time as City heads to Swansea in the next round.
